Basically, there are two paints – water based and oil-based.

Latex Paint is made with a water base and is usually used for the interior of your house. Latex paint is simple to clean up because you can dissolve it with soap and water. It has very small odor.

Oil-based (alkyd) paint is usually used for the exterior of your house. These paints are more durable and work well on surfaces that get lots of wear and tear. They are usually made with a Soya-based resin and need some kind of solvent for clean up, such as paint thinner.

What does gloss means? It means shine and the higher paint’s gloss, the shinier its appearance. The more gloss paint have, the easier it is to scrub or wipe clean.

Gloss categories:

-Flat paint is almost no shine in the paint, good for low-traffic areas such as dining rooms and bedrooms.

-Low-luster, a satin and eggshell paint has a subtle sheen that is glossier than a flat paint.
-Semi-gloss paint is more gloss than those listed above, and more durable.
-High-gloss paint is shiny and easy to wipe up. Great for trim, molding, cabinets and doors.

Instructions for decorating your walls

1. Slide all four canvases together on a table or other flat surface so they form one big rectangle. Then trace your design, making sure some of the shapes or part of the scene extends between two or more of the individual canvases - this gives it the expert touch.

2. Next, slide the canvases apart and place that paint brush to work! Don’t forget to also persist the color down the sides and edges of the canvas.

3. Allow the paint dry. You may have to apply many coats.

4. When the paint is totally dry, it’s time to hang up your creation. When you attach them to the walls, leave about an inch or inch and a half in between every individual canvas, so you can see a sliver of wall in between each rectangle. Use a level to ensure the canvases aren’t crooked. You may want to grab a friend with a good eye to assist you with alignment.

5. You are finished! Enjoy your masterpiece and the compliments you’re sure to receive.

Digital Landscape won art prize

A digital artist has been named Welsh Artist of the Year 2009 for his subversive take on a traditional landscape picture. Cardiff-based Tim Freeman's entry Hidden System beat 500 other entries to get the title.

He was presented among the £2000 winner's cheque in a ceremony at St David's Hall, Cardiff on Sunday.

His work will now form the centerpieces of an exhibition which runs until 25 July. The judging panel, which included renowned Welsh artist Terry Setch and previous year's winner Philippa Lawrence, said it was the "quality" of Mr Freeman's image which stood out from the other entries, as well as several by well-known and professional Welsh artists.

There were also prizes for artists in categories including applied arts, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, student, photography and time-based media and five highly commended awards.
