GLAZE PAINTING AND IT'S TECHNIQUES

A glaze painting is a thin, transparent layer or coat of paint and glazing is just building up a color by applying thin, transparent layers or coats one at the top of another. Each glaze modifies the color of what’s already been painted on the canvas.

If you look through a sheet of yellow or blue plastic, everything would appear yellow or blue. If you try to overlap them, the yellow and blue together would visually blend and make everything appear as green. This is because light rays mix together, creating a visual color mixture. Great depth can be achieved by using several layers of transparent color. In a glaze painting, light rays penetrate the layers and strike the canvas surface and reflect back to the eye creating various visual color mixtures. This is the simple principle behind transparent glaze paintings.

Extremely transparent colors are needed for the final layers of glazes. Each layer of color must be thoroughly dry before the next is applied. So in some paintings a thin coat of separator vanish between the glazes is required.
